Criminal Court Cases in Davidson County
Davidson County criminal cases belong to North Carolina's General Court of Justice. District Court tries misdemeanors and infractions and handles the first stages of felony matters. Superior Court tries felonies, hears misdemeanor and infraction appeals anew, and may receive some other criminal matters set by law. A less serious felony can sometimes end with a guilty plea in District Court. There is no city or municipal criminal court in Lexington, Thomasville, or Midway.
The elected Clerk of Superior Court keeps both District and Superior Court files. The main Davidson County courthouse is at 110 W Center Street, Lexington, NC 27292. Its main clerk line is (336) 242-6701, and public hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Davidson County is in Prosecutorial, Superior Court, and District Court District 33.
The North Carolina Superior Court overview shows why a felony file may pass through more than one courtroom.
The court level shown on a Davidson County case record reflects the charge and procedural stage, not a separate county court system.
Davidson County Court File Counters
Most Davidson County criminal court file work routes through the Lexington courthouse. The Thomasville Branch, 22 Randolph Street, Thomasville, NC 27360, also provides state court services. Its phone is (336) 474-3185, and its public hours match Lexington's weekday schedule. Both locations use PO Box 1064, Lexington, NC 27293, for court mail.
The official branch page does not identify every paper file or criminal calendar held in Thomasville. Call before making a trip for a particular Davidson County court case. That small check can prevent a visit to the wrong counter. The Davidson court contact directory also lists the District Attorney, judges, and magistrates, but the clerk remains the record custodian.

Davidson County Case Record Searches
The North Carolina eCourts Portal allows free anonymous searches of public case information. Registration can save matters under My Cases, but it does not open sealed files or add public access. Start with the full Enterprise Justice case number when known. A party-name search works too, though a name is not biometric proof that a result belongs to the right person.
- Open Smart Search and choose the search type that matches the identifier in hand.
- Enter the full case number or party name. Use the official wildcard rules only if an exact query fails.
- Filter for Davidson County, criminal case type, status, date of birth, or filing dates to cut false matches.
- Open the Case Summary or Register of Actions and read events, hearings, and dispositions in date order.
- Ask the Davidson County clerk for a paper copy, certification, or terminal help when the public view is incomplete.
| Portal module | Search fields | Best use | Access |
|---|---|---|---|
| Smart Search | Name, DOB, case number, type, status, filing dates, location | Filed Davidson criminal cases | Anonymous public search |
| Search Hearings | Case, party, business, attorney, bar number, judge, courtroom | Hearing time and place | Public results only |
| Judgment Search | Party or case, type, status, location, judgment date | Judgment index and status | Public results only |
| My Cases | Registered account and saved matters | Saving a case list | No added record access |
Note: Victims do not appear in ordinary party-search results, and a missing Davidson County matter may be sealed, restricted, or mis-keyed.
Davidson County eCourts Changed in 2025
Davidson County joined the statewide Enterprise Justice system when North Carolina completed deployment on October 13, 2025. Older bookmarks, screen shots, and search tips may point to a retired county workflow. Current research should begin with the Judicial Branch training page, not an old vendor address.
The official eCourts training resource shows the live public path and its search modules.
This statewide interface now provides the first online stop for a filed Davidson County criminal case, while the clerk counter remains the fallback for paper and archival material.
What a Criminal Case File Contains
A Davidson County case file follows the prosecution, not merely the arrest. The public Case Summary may show only panels that contain data. For example, no financial panel does not prove that a balance was paid or waived. The clerk's file and docket provide the best official account of the filed charge, later amendments, hearings, plea or trial, and final result.
| Case information | Case number, court location, case type, status, and filing details. |
|---|---|
| Assignment information | The Davidson County court assignment or judicial handling data shown publicly. |
| Party information | Public parties linked to the case; ordinary party results exclude victims. |
| Case events | Dated filings, appearances, scheduled actions, and docket activity. |
| Hearings | Public hearing dates, times, and locations when available. |
| Disposition and judgment | The charge outcome, plea or finding, sentence, and judgment status shown in the record. |
| Financial information | Costs or obligations when that section contains public data. |
The Judicial Branch criminal case explanation separates the police report from the court file.
That distinction matters because an incident narrative remains with the investigating agency even after charges reach Davidson County court.
Decode a Davidson County Case Number
An Enterprise Justice case number uses a two-digit year, letters, a six-digit sequence, and a three-digit county identifier. The official training example is 21CR000003-910. Entering the complete number is more precise than a common-name search. If a number or business name is incomplete, type at least four known characters followed by *.
A person-name wildcard is stricter. Supply at least three known surname characters followed by * and at least one first-name character followed by *. Broad wildcard searches can return many Davidson County criminal cases with similar names. Narrow by county, DOB, case type, or filing date before drawing any conclusion.
- Disposition
- The court's outcome for a charge, such as conviction, dismissal, or acquittal.
- Register of Actions
- The date-ordered list of public events recorded in the Davidson County case.
- Infraction
- A noncriminal violation handled through the court system.
- De novo appeal
- A new Superior Court hearing of a District Court misdemeanor or infraction appeal.
Criminal Case Stages in Davidson County
A Davidson County criminal case does not always pass through every possible stage. A dismissal, waiver, plea, or deferral may end it early. Felony matters usually begin with District Court proceedings before trial in Superior Court. A contested Superior Court felony trial ordinarily uses a twelve-person jury unless a valid waiver applies.
Case flow: Charges Filed › Arraignment › Pretrial › Plea or Trial › Disposition › Sentencing
A summons can formally charge a person without an arrest and direct that person to appear. A warrant commands arrest. Missing court may lead to an order for arrest, bond consequences, fees, license action, or another charge. The portal may show case and hearing events, but it is not promoted as a complete active-warrant index.
Davidson Felonies Cross Court Levels
District Court conducts early felony proceedings, including first appearances and probable-cause work. A grand jury may then return an indictment before a felony trial in Superior Court. District Court also tries misdemeanors and infractions. Some less serious felony pleas can finish there, so the word “felony” alone does not identify the last courtroom.
The Davidson County criminal file should be read by event and disposition rather than by the first charge. A guilty plea is a conviction even when the sentence says time served. A conditional discharge or deferred result may later become a dismissal if its terms are completed. An infraction can appear in a criminal-court workflow without becoming a criminal conviction.
Davidson County Court Copies and Certification
Public courthouse terminals offer a free, noncertified statewide search by defendant name, case number, or victim or witness name. Results may be viewed or emailed. Printing can cost money. For a certified Davidson County name search, submit form AOC-CR-314 and pay $25. One clerk can certify only that clerk's county result, so the product is not a single certified statewide search.
The clerk accepts AOC-CR-314 in person or by mail. An in-person request can be paid by cash, supported card, money order, or certified check. Mail requests require a money order or certified check; cash and personal checks are not accepted. Card processing fees and restrictions can apply at the counter.
The court-record copy instructions explain that paper files belong with the clerk in the filing county.
Exact ordinary page, certification, and archive-retrieval charges were not posted for Davidson County, so ask the clerk for a current quote before ordering.
When Davidson Court Search Fails
First verify the selected search type and case-number format. Remove excess filters, clear the browser cache, or try a private window if concurrent sessions cause trouble. A registered account is not required for anonymous public searching and does not bypass confidentiality controls.
If the Davidson County criminal case still does not appear, use a clerk terminal or call the Lexington counter. No official online-year floor was published. Enterprise Justice includes converted legacy data, but older paper coverage and document access can vary. Ask whether the requested file is archived and whether Thomasville can produce it before traveling there.
Access Rules for Case Records
North Carolina Public Records Law generally supports inspection and copies of public records at reasonable times. Yet the public court view excludes sealed and confidential matters and sensitive documents. Victim information receives added protection, and juvenile material is not part of the ordinary public criminal-case search.
Paper case files and copies should be requested from the Davidson County Clerk, not through the statewide court administration's general public-record form. The clerk can explain access and current costs but cannot give legal advice. A lawfully expunged record should not remain in the public index, though limited confidential official access may continue under statute.
The official Davidson County court directory identifies the right local office when a public record needs a custodian.
Use the clerk for the court file, the investigating agency for its report, and the North Carolina SBI for a person's own fingerprint-supported state record.
Davidson Court Files Are Not Arrest Reports
An arresting agency records the alleged event and arrest. The jail records booking and present custody. Davidson County court records track the filed prosecution and judicial outcome. SBI Right to Review, available only to the subject, reports fingerprint-supported North Carolina arrest cycles and associated dispositions when available. These sources can differ because each is made at another point in the process.
For an arrest narrative, request the report from DCSO, Lexington Police, Thomasville Police, or the agency that made the arrest. For current custody, use the official jail roster. For the plea, dismissal, acquittal, or sentence, use the Davidson County case file. The broader Davidson County arrest search explains those agency and custody channels without treating an arrest as guilt.
